The town

Coppabella means
crossing place.

A small Central Queensland community, built around the railway that carries the Bowen Basin.

Coppabella sits roughly 49km from Moranbah and 159km from Mackay, with daily flights through both centres.

The town was established around the railway network that supports the Bowen Basin mining industry. It stands at the junction of the Goonyella and Saraji lines, which connect the region’s mines with the coal export terminal at Hay Point. The Goonyella to Hay Point line opened on 5 November 1971, and Coppabella Railway Station opened the same day.

Today Coppabella is wholly owned and operated by the QRI Group, and offers a good deal more than a place to stop between shifts. The town includes a service station and convenience store, an Australia Post agency, a 293-room accommodation village, residential housing, a community bar and beer garden, a 9-hole golf course, swimming pool, basketball and tennis courts, a football oval, caravan park, state school, fire brigade and town water supply.

The name was adopted by Queensland Railway at the suggestion of the General Manager, Central Division, and is said to be an Aboriginal word meaning “crossing place”.

The difference

Your room is yours. Nobody hot-beds it.

Every guest at Coppabella is guaranteed sole occupancy — one person, one room, one key, for the whole stay.

It sounds like a small thing until you’ve worked a fortnight of nights and had to share your space and sleep schedule with someone on the opposite roster. At Coppabella, sole occupancy is not an upgrade or a premium tier. It is standard across all 293 rooms, whether you’re staying casually or under contract.

Privacy is what turns a bed into rest, and rest is what your crew turns up with in the morning.

The room

Purpose-built.
Then rebuilt.

293 rooms across the village, each one a self-contained private space with its own ensuite. No shared ablution blocks, no walk across the gravel at 3am.

01

Private ensuite

Full bathroom in every room. Yours alone.

02

Air conditioning

Individually controlled. Central Queensland summers are not negotiable.

03

Smart television

Streaming-ready, connected to village high-speed Wi-Fi.

04

Bar fridge

For your own food, drinks and night-shift habits.

05

Sole occupancy

Guaranteed on every booking, without exception.

2026 · Refurbishment underway

A 12-month staged rebuild of every room in the village

QRI Group began a full staged refurbishment of all 293 rooms in 2026. Work moves through the village in blocks, so the village stays open and operating throughout.

Hotel-quality beds

New king single or double, replacing the originals.

Two lockable wardrobes

Leave your gear on site between swings. Back-to-back and ongoing bookings keep one locked while the room turns over.

Contemporary interiors

New furnishings and finishes, specified for long stays rather than overnight ones.

More about the rooms

The mess

The best thing
about camp
is the food.

Senior chefs, fresh produce.

Our 14-day protein plan is built around nutritional and health requirements. Each chef creates their own daily menu from it — delivering variety for guests and creativity in the kitchen.

Breakfast & crib

A full buffet breakfast, and a crib bench where you build your own lunch for the day rather than collect a pre-made bag.

All-day salad bar

Hot and cold, open right through the day alongside a fruit cabinet and homemade baked goods.

Dinner, properly cooked

A fourteen-day protein plan built around the dietary needs of a working roster — with rotating chefs writing their own daily menus inside it.

Good food away from home is not catering. It's the part of the day that makes the rest of it bearable.
